Cisco Packet Tracer 6.0.1

I'm a little behind with this. With Cisco's whole move to the new NetSpace portal it looks like there was a new version of Packet Tracer. 6.0.1 offers new features but has the same look and feel to it.

Straight from the FAQ:

Packet Tracer 6.0.1 is a major release that includes the following functionality:

● Supports IOS 15.2 and its licensing methodology
● Enhanced IPv6 support
● Supports new devices such as ISR 1941, ISR 2901, ISR 2911, terminal server interface, and servers with 2 network interface cards
● Supports Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) and ACL sequence numbers
● Provides new capability with PT LAN and WAN Multiuser Servers to create multiuser games and activities
● Provides new capability with PT Bridge to connect real network equipment to Packet Tracer environment

Its disappointing to see they have missed OS X once more, it can't be a world away from the Ubuntu install. I haven't tried it on Ubuntu yet but I wonder if you still need to install the dependencies that come with programs like Wine in order for it to work still or if they have started including them like they should!

Ofcom Clears UK 800MHz Airwaves for Launch of 4G Mobile Broadband

Title and link has all the information really.

My first proper mod. Shuttle 120mm fan.

So I've began modding a 120mm fan into the top of my Shuttle XPC. The hole is a bit rough as it was trickier and louder than I expected with a Dremel, but with a metal file it shouldn't take too long to sort out. Trying to find some U-channel rubber for the edging in the UK is a pain also! I also have a minimal black circular grill to allow maximum air flow and hopefully avoid anything falling into the fan.

The only down side to this mod is I lose a hard drive bay in the top of the shuttle. With three in there its not a massive loss, especially since I got a HP mini server for use as a NAS.

Next I have a 80mm side fan to do. That is going to make getting the case on and off a bit tricky though as its tight for space inside. I really need an in-take fan though as I have a lot of exhaust fans.

TalkTalk announce their results. Still not great in my opinion.

Currently making a meal of my parents Business FTTC install (If it was residential it would have gone on Sky).

The PSTN had FeatureLine on it (gets you an incompatible product when you place a fibre order) so they took the line to WLR3 first and then are moving it to MFP LLU before FTTC. Their correspondence is awful and confusing for customers not in the know. All it needs is one letter explaining this, instead they send multiple as if you've signed up to each service separately confusing the hell out of the purchaser as to what they've actually bough. One person asked me to start going through the order again when it was already over on WLR3 (cutting off the internet which had been SMPF with them and not making them aware of the longer downtime than initially planned)!

The only plus side is they are cheaper that BT infinity for unlimited usage wtih a static IP.

Bodrum, Turkey, VDSL2 !

So I went back to Bodrum Turkey again this summer after 2 years to find that they had VDSL2 rolled out across Bodrum and Gumbet. Below is a picture of the cabinets. I was impressed that a town which doesn't have 24/7 running water (houses have water storage tanks) has such infrastructure!

Interestingly it might be Alcatel-Lucent equipment as Turk Telekom use that in their exchanges but i'm unsure if there are any other companies involved. I thought it would have been Huawei at a guess.
